Traditional massage at the barber Every barber is by tradition also a masseur and they are experts. Normaly a little massage should be included in every shaving but from tourist they will charge now an extra fee. Barbers are born into the barber caste so they will learn from early age from their father all the skills needed. Just beware of the twisting of the head, it can be harmfull. Most barbers in Pokhara have now a little massage room behind their barber room.
Massage centers Massage has a long tradition in Asia. So you will also find many good massage centers in Pokhara wich trained staff in different massage technices like ayurweda etc.
A personal and totaly subjetive recommendation The massage Center “Stairway to Heaven” i have no deeper knowledge of the many massage centers in Pokhara but i would like to highlight one of them. i have been trekking with my porter guide Prem Rai and on the trek he has already told about his dedication to massage and his massage center in Pokhara. He is running this massage center with his wife Maina Rai and her younger brother. All of them had followed many courses in ayurvic massage. in 2008 i went to Pokhara with my 78 year old mother and brought her to the massage. And Maina made really a miracle. After 3 massages my mother feeled an looked several years younger and was very satisfied. She said she had never had such a gentle and good massage in Germany. We returnde in 2009 and again she was very happy. Even a half year later, she can still move much better her formely stiff finges. But it is not only something for old people, a French woman of 28 said she would have loved to bring Maina directly with her to France. It is definitively worth a try The massage center is situated on the first floor and you have to go up a stair hidden behind a money changer. When my mother said to me “ going up there is just like going to heaven I immidialtly had the song of Led Zeppelin “Stairway to heaven” in my mind and suggested this name to Prem and Maina. So it is now called “Stairway to heaven “ massage center.
How to go there: There is a wellknown little street place in Pokhara lakeside where you can find Hungry Eye Restaurant, This little place is near the place on the fewa lake, where the boats go to the temple island, Go from this place to the west and pass Snowland hotel. Soon you will reach a big tree just before Meera Hotel. Behind the tree you will find the Stairway to Heaven.
