AC Anticlockwise or just the Jomsomtrek. Going up from Kageni to Muktinath
The reason for this chapter is that quite a few people don’t make the full AC but
just make the so called Jomsom trek without crossing Thorong La. In fact the Jomsom trek is a excellent trek by its own and a perfect trek if you have not so much time as required by the AC.
I did it several times and always enjoyed a lot. Classically you will either fly in or out, or make one of the ways by bus.
As flight are often cancelled because of the weather conditions it is better to fly in
then out. If the flight is cancelled you are still in Pokhara and can spend easier your days than waiting in Jomsom. Once we waited for two days for a flight and on the
third day we were already waiting in the departure hall and saw our plane landing. But when it was just around 10 m above the ground it suddenly started again and
returned back to Pokhara and we had to walk down to Tatopani as we could not risk another day delay.
The problem of the altitude when flying into Jomsom:
Jomsom is already 2720 m high and your body will need sufficient time for acclimatization. I have seen several people who directly climbed the day of their
arrival to Muktinath, just to be very sick and suffer. I think it is rather stupid to spoil your holydays in just so beautiful surroundings just because you climb to fast.
A much better schedule is to walk the first day only to magical Kagbeni. Even when
it is only o 2800 m you will probably not sleep so well the first night and even have some headache. And you have the full afternoon to explore Kagbeni.
The next day I would only go till Jhong as it is lower than Ranipauwa.
A perfect roundtrip to the Muktinath area would be:
- Day 1: flight to Pokhara - walk to Kagbeni
- Day 2: Kagbeni – Jhong NATT 52
- Day 3. Jhong - Muktinath Temple - Purang –Jharkot NATT 43
- Day 4: Jharkot- Lupra- Jomsom NATT 47
Instead of going directly to Jomsom you could go with an extra day
- Day 4: Jharkot- Lupra - Eklebhatti NATT 47
- Day 5: high route over the windy pass: Eklebhatti.-Pakling- Phalyang – Jomsom NATT 54
